October 2018: Recipients of the James Clark Medal bestowed by the British Tunnelling Society in recognition of a major contribution or contemporary achievement or innovation within the tunnelling industry were hosted to the annual tribute luncheon at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. Since being established in 1981, the Medal has been presented to 38 leading British engineers. Among these is John Bartlett OBE who was also awarded in 2018 the Sir Frank Whittle Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering for his invention of the bentonite slurry tunnelling machine in 1964 that became the forebear of modern pressurised TBMs. A great day was enjoyed by all.
