July 2019: Fifty years after the first landing by man on the moon in 1969, there is renewed interest in exploiting the moon as a staging post for interspace exploration. Jamal Rostami, Director of Earth Mechanics Institute at the Colorado School of Mines in the USA explains how the key to colonising the moon depends fundamentally on excavating environments beneath the moon surface to protect operations from the hostile surface environment and discusses the commercial potential that is supporting current research projects.
