Lunar construction to be discussed at WTC 2019 18 Apr 2019

With only three weeks to go before the WTC 2019 in Naples from 3-9 May, a packed programme of lectures and activities is prepared for the 2,000 participants expected to attend from all over the world and convene at the Mostra D’Olremare Conference Centre.

A prestigious line up of more than 150 speakers will include Jamal Rostami from the Colorado School of Mines, who will talk about excavating equipment designed to build tunnels on the moon.

Also presenting will be

  • Martin Herrenknecht, CEO of Herrenknecht, who will present the ITA Sir Allan Muir Wood Lecutre;
  • Georgios Anagnostou of ETH University in Zurich;
  • Raffaele Zurlo, Konrad Bergmeister and Mario Virano, associated with the construction of the great Alpine railway tunnels;
  • Håkan Stille from Sweden;
  • Markus Thewes from Germany;
  • Pietro Lunardi from Italy, and
  • Mike Mooney from the USA

Lectures will cover major issues facing the tunnelling industry worldwide and will highlight projects including:

  • the role of the Cairo Metro in saving the social costs of air pollution
  • a feasibility study for construction of the Naples Line 6 underground metro
  • the Grand Paris Express Line 15 South development
  • the Brenner Baseline tunnel between Austria and Italy
  • the City Rail Link in Auckland, New Zealand
  • the Anacostia River CEO project in Washington DC, USA, and
  • the Stockholm underground highway bypass in Sweden

The specially convened Triple-A sessions will discuss Archaeology, Architecture and Art in relation to underground construction, in collaboration with ITACUS, this ITA Committee on Underground Space, co-chaired by Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro, and in the presence of other renowned designers and planners of the underground, including Elisabeth Reynolds, Elsa Wifstrand and Dominique Perrault.
