FCC Construction has just completed boring on the Bolaños tunnels. The two parallel single-track tunnels, each 6.7km long, are on the Verínto to Ourense section of the Madrid-Galicia high-speed rail line in Spain.
The first tunnel took 11.5 months to complete, with an average excavation performance of 19.4m per day, and the second took 9.5 months with an average per day of 24.32m.
As the ground was geologically highly unstable a single shield TBM manufactured by Herrenknecht in Germany was used for the excavation. With an excavation diameter of 9.9m and a useful cross-section of 60.27m², the tunnel was lined using precast segments 370mm thick by 1.6m long.
FCC Construction has built up experience and technical knowledge in transport infrastructure which has increased the company's competitiveness and internationalisation in the rail sector according to Carlos M Jarque, CEO of FCC Group. It has built more than 99km of high speed rail in Galicia, including the Bolaños tunnel and the 8.5km long Vigo-Das Maceiras tunnel.
