Driving sea outfalls for Sochi Winter Olympics

- The first two sea outfall tunnels to be constructed in Russia are completed as part of a programme of infrastructure improvements prior to next year's (2014) Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Special rescue module allowed TBM extraction at sea
- Russian utility tunnelling company ZAO PRiSS of St Petersburg excavated the first outfall from a 25m deep shaft at the newly constructed Bzugu wastewater treatment plant to the coast, and then from the coast out to the Black Sea, using a small bore 2.525m diameter TBM manufactured by Herrenknecht. The navigation system was supplied by VMT.
- After recovery of the machine at sea following the first drive - using a special rescue module that allowed the machine to be sealed at the bottom of the sea by means of a bulkhead, separated from the tunnel using cylinders, and then floated to the surface for removal by crane - the machine was refurbished for use in the second outfall project from another new wastewater treatment plant in the Adler district of Sochi. Following 100 further days of excavation the machine finished laying 2,014m of pipeline for the second outfall project at the end of March (2013), registering a top daily performance of 37m.
- The machine completed the first 1,411m sea outfall, which extended 800m out to sea, in August 2012. High abrasiveness of the mainly limestone geology meant extreme demands were made on the machine tools and the pumps of the slurry circuit. In the event no major problems were encountered and a top daily performance of 30m was achieved.
- The large-scale infrastructure package in Sochi has also included the construction of 40km of road and railway tunnels. An EPBM of 10.63m diameter and a Single Shield TBM of 13.21m diameter from Herrenknecht excavated 3.1km of road tunnel and 3.1km of rail tunnel between 2010 and 2012.
