Hard rock TBM for Mumbai water transfer 26 Dec 2019

Terratec News Release

A hard rock open gripper TBM of 3.2m diameter is on order from Terratec by Patel Engineering to complete two drives for a 5.5km long water transfer tunnel contract in the city of Mumbai. The Amar Mahal II project for the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai in Maharashtra is one of a number of projects currently being undertaken to augment and improve the water distribution system for Mumbai to meet increased demand and ensure reliable supply. The 5.5km tunnel will run at an average depth of 80 to 90m below the surface from the Trombay high level reservoir to Hedgewar Udyan (Ghatkopar), via the Trombay low level reservoir.

To work effectively in mixed basalt conditions expected along the alignment, the Terratec open gripper TBM will be equipped with 22 x 15in back-loading disc cutters and fitted with anti-wear plates and lubrication systems to assist with wear prevention and dust suppression. In addition, the machine will be fitted with drilling systems for probing and grouting of the ground ahead of the TBM and for installing rockbolts. It will have a steel arch erector and shotcrete pumps to assist in ground support activities.

The order comes following strong performance of several Terratec TBMs in India in recent years. “I think it is common knowledge that Terratec is now a market leader in India, for all types of TBMs, and while a lot of business is from returning customers, we enjoy working with new clients, such as in this case,” said Bruce Matheson, Terratec Sales and Marketing Director. “New clients come to us because they hear about our flexibility and efficiency and they are not disappointed. We work with customers throughout the boring life cycle, from pre-bid conception through to the completion of tunnelling and machine demobilisation. This is appreciated as our new clients then return to us again and again.”

This will be the 26th Terratec machine delivered to India in the last six years. “This is more than all other TBM manufacturers combined in the same period,” said Matheson. It continues Terratec successes on projects including Phase III of the Delhi Metro and on the Lucknow, Ahmadabad, Mumbai and Pune Metros where robust TBM design, prompt onsite assistance, a readily available stock of TBM spares and specialised support is offered throughout the tunnelling operation.
