BTS Tunnel design and construction course 17 May 2018

TunnelTalk reporting

Registration continues for the annual tunnel design and construction training course organised and managed by the British Tunnelling Society (BTS). Running from 2 to 6 July 2018, the course takes place at the University of Warwick in Coventry in the UK and participants from around the world are eligible and invited to take part.

The comprehensive five-day residential course is aimed at young design and construction engineers at the start of their civil engineering careers and requiring or desiring a detailed introduction to all aspects of the tunnelling and underground construction industry to expand their knowledge and employment prospects.

“There has been a substantial increase in the number of new underground infrastructure projects across the globe over the last decade and the demand for skilled professionals in this specific and particular field of civil and geotechnical design and construction engineering is high,” said BTS Chair Mark Leggett. “The international tunnel industry climate at the moment presents fantastic opportunities for right-minded young people, engineers, surveyors, geologists, geotechnical engineers, and technicians, to take up a rewarding and personally fulfilling career in this industry."

In recent years the course has attracted up to 90 delegates with young professionals from the UK joined by participants from Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Kenya, Qatar, Dubai, Egypt, Spain, France, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland and Ireland. Delegates have included representatives from client organisations and construction and consulting engineering firms as well as manufacturers and suppliers of equipment and materials and those from the financial and insurance industries with involvement in tunnelling projects. The course programme aims to engage and stimulate debate, enhance learning, and to seek feedback in return to contribute to development for the course for future sessions.

The course speakers and lecturers are all recognised experts in their own fields and the presentation programme is widely accepted within the industry as providing the highest standard of technical content developed to engage and inform attendees from a wide range of backgrounds.

Course fees for the five-day intensive programme range up to £1,575 for a full room and board live-in delegate.

To support the education and training of new professionals for the UK underground construction industry, the BTS offers a sponsorship programme for up to five UK participants. These are available to either university students, apprentices of more than 18 years old, or those professionals or graduates who are not in employment at present. Sponsorship includes the course fee and full room and board accommodation with a value up to £1,585.

In addition to a link to all the course presentations, each delegate receives a large lever arch file of course notes and materials on the first day and receives a hard copy of two technical publications – Monitoring Underground Construction and Specification for Tunnelling, Third Edition. On completing the course, each delegate receives a Continuing Professional Development certificate from the BTS.

Having completed the course, delegates will:
