Sochi welcomes tunnellers to share experiences Jan 2011
Conference News Release
At present, there are 20 tunnels with a total length of more than 40km currently under construction in the Black Sea coastal city of Russia. This is an unprecedented amount of underground development underway at once in a city the size of Sochi. Most excavation is required for road and railway tunnels and for projects needed as part of a successful hosting by Russia and the city of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Construction of such a large number of tunnels, within a short period of time is a considerable challenge, made more complex by when particular conditions are considered. Much of the tunnelling is having to deal with urban area logistics, conservation zones, mountain relief topography, and unfavorable geological conditions influenced by tectonic zones and seismic activity. This combination of concerns has required lateral thinking and new approaches. Designers and contractors have applied the most innovative and highly productive equipment and materials from the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers.
On the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee, the Russian Tunnelling Association with the International Tunnelling Association has organized an international conference to share Russian and international success experiences in construction of transport tunnels and appreciate the effective problem solving discussions that occurred during the design and construction of the tunnel projects in Sochi.
The Conference will be held on February 8-10, 2011 in Sochi. Specialists of Russian design, engineering, construction and research organizations and specialists of leading international companies will participate in the conference.

base standards for design and construction of transport tunnels;
equipment and technologies for construction of tunnels using conventional, TBM and cut-and-cover excavation methods;
structure and materials for temporary support and lining;
tunnel waterproofing;
methods of passing through fault zones and unstable ground zones;
ways and means of assessing and monitoring rock and lining conditions during tunnel construction;
consideration of landslide dangers and protection of natural and urban environment during tunnel construction and maintenance;
new experiences in the operation of transport tunnels
All those interested in the wider advance of tunnelling opportunities in the vast Russian market as well as in the achievements of underground works in Sochi are welcome.
