Herrenknecht buys pressure pump manufacturer May 2011
- Herrenknecht has expanded its group of key component manufacturers with majority ownership acquisition of specialist high-pressure pump manufacturer Schäfer & Urbach. Based in Ratingen near Düsseldorf, Schäfer & Urbach GmbH has been a major supplier of high-pressure piston pumps and systems to Herrenknecht for several years. Its acquisition extends the Herrenknecht portfolio of group companies and enables the machine manufacturer to rely on its own, as well as independent, competence in this crutial component area.

Schäfer & Urbach pump installation for the vertical drilling industry
- High-pressure technology and systems by Schäfer & Urbach are used in Herrenknecht's HDD (horizontal directional drilling) machines and in innovative deep drilling rigs supplied by Herrenknecht Vertical to the on and offshore oil and gas exploration and geothermal energy industries. Schäfer & Urbach mud pumps represent key core components especially in achieving bore hole safety.
- Executive Management of the newly-integrated Schäfer & Urbach GmbH will be shared by the Schäfer & Urbach CEO of many years, Peter Pawlitzki (Engineer, aged 63) and by Herrenknecht AG's Philippe Fraunhofer (Industrial Engineer, aged 43).
- Within the integration framework, Schäfer & Urbach's business is to be internationalized via the international Herrenknecht sales network. Existing customer relations will continue to be supported by long-term members of the company with customers largely representing the areas of oil exploration, the petrochemical and steel industries.

- Established 85 years ago, the core business at Schäfer & Urbach involves the development and manufacture of high-pressure piston pumps and pump systems. In this special field, products marketed by Schäfer & Urbach enjoy international renown in their respective industries. The product range also comprises descaling systems, high-pressure technology for cleaning large storage tanks in the oil industry as well as highly-specialized welding technology. Schäfer & Urbach employs about 60 people at its location in Ratingen.
- Based in Schwanau, Herrenknecht AG has added several specialist group companies to its core business of designing and delivering high-tech tunnel boring machines for all ground conditions, in all diamater sizes, to all parts of the world.
- Innovative specialists work in specific expertise divisions that include the development of high-tech deep drilling rigs capable of drilling to 6,000m for the oil and gas and geothermal energy exploration industries.
