Telvent news release
Road and rail tunnel usage in Brazil will be enhanced with application of a real-time management system supplied by Spanish IT company Telvent. Quoted on the Nasdaq stock exchange under ticker TLVT, the global IT solutions and business information services provider will help Brazilian Transportation and Infrastructures Authority DNIT, enhance road safety on its transportation infrastructures by installing its Telvent SmartMobilityTM Tunnel management system on the El Morro Alto Tunnels. The contract, worth some €14.5 million ($US20 million) is part of DNIT's ambitious plan to improve tunnel infrastructures on Brazil's road networks.

The project is the first step towards accomplishing a high priority of the DNIT to enhance safety and security on their critical road and rail transportation infrastructures. The Telvent SmartMobilityTM Tunnel solution will allow DNIT operators in charge of operation and maintenance of the El Morro Alto tunnels to be aware at all times of what is happening inside the tunnel, to diagnose and control traffic in real time and to be prepared to respond quickly and appropriately to any emergency situation. This technological deployment will lead to a substantial improvement in incident response times and more efficient management of maintenance plans, which, in turn, will lead to a decrease in accident rates and an increase in users' safety.
Telvent's SmartMobilityTM is based on its own supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology, which centralizes both tunnel infrastructure and traffic management operations, giving operators a comprehensive set of tools that will facilitate management and increase security at the same time. Specifically, the following systems will integrated on the central control center: emergency signaling; closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance; emergency intercom; variable messaging; lighting; ventilation; and communications networks.
According to Telvent's Chairman and CEO, Manuel Sanchez: "We are pleased to be able to collaborate with the Brazilian Transportation and Infrastructures Authority in enhancing Brazilian critical infrastructures safety and security with the aim of reducing accident rates".
This contract allows Telvent to strengthen its position in the Brazilian market, as technological leader in intelligent transportation systems. The company has completed successfully numerous projects in Brazil, including several highway management projects, ticketing systems and the urban traffic control (UTC) development and maintenance in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte. Finally, it is worth mentioning that Telvent is the only company to have installed successfully a centralized tunnel management system for the Ecovias dos Inmigrantes tollway.
