The first Aerolift vacuum segment erectors were used for the Channel Tunnel project in 1987. A lot has changed since then and a new vacuum lifting solution for the complete segment handling process has been designed for supply by Aerolift Industrials B.V. of The Netherlands. One of the first application of the equipment for inside the TBMs is to the CREG TBMs supplied for excavation of the Red Line Metro project in Tel Aviv, Israel. Six CREG TBMs were used to complete the 11km underground alignment of the 24km extension.
Casting of the segments for a segmental lining all need to be demoulded, lifted, turned and transported. To improve safety and efficiency during production, the Aerolift vacuum lifters can demould, lift and turn through 180 degrees in one movement. After a swift production process the segments are ready for transport to the TBM.
At the TBM, the ring build area is a particular environment. It can be dirty, offers limited space and demands a compact and robust segment lifting system. The Aerolift vacuum lifting solution is specially developed to be reliable, despite the tough conditions. The vacuum erectors are designed to increase safety in the work environment and to be highly efficient.
The Aerolift vacuum lifting system for the Tel Aviv Metro TBMs comprise two units - one to transport segments through the TBM to the segment feeder of the erector, and a second as part of the segment erector of the machine. The first vacuum lift unit rotates the segments through 90 degrees for presenting to the ring build area.
The vacuum segment erector has the ability to lift the segment in two directions and rotate slightly to optimise segment positioning accuracy. The erector has three suction pads. If a key segment is lifted, only the middle suction pad is active. To gain access to the bolt holes of the key segment, the central suction pad is designed to extend and retract. Key segment recognition ensures that all suction pads are activated when lifting a normal sized segment.
