From 18 to 20 November 2019, the leading international specialists involved in creating powerful and innovative structures for major road and rail links, technical tunnels and underground space will come together in Miami to attend the ITA Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards followed by Cutting Edge Advance Conference.
“This is the 5th edition of the ITA Tunnelling Awards and it is the very first time that this event is held in the Americas, where many tunnelling projects are now under construction or to be built in the future,” said ITA President Jenny Yan.
“Besides the World Tunnel Congress, ITA Tunnelling Awards is another major annual event of ITA, focusing on the yearly outstanding tunnelling projects, technical project innovation and technical product/equipment innovation, innovative underground space concept as well as safety initiative. This year, we have received 71 entries worldwide and 34 of them are for the three categories of yearly tunnelling projects (large, moderate and small size), which means that many outstanding projects have been recently built worldwide.
“The mission of ITA is to promote the use of tunnelling and underground space through knowledge sharing and technical advance. So, the yearly progress and achievements are undoubtedly very important to this mission and to our international tunnelling industry. Moreover, the awards will recognise not only the outstanding projects and innovations, but also the senior expert of lifetime achievement who has made great contributions to our industry and the excellent young tunneller who represents the future of our industry.”
The 3-day event will showcase the diversity and skills of ITA members with conferences led by specialists in the sector from all over the world. Through eight categories and one Lifetime Achievement Award, the ITA Tunnelling Awards rewards the most ground-breaking innovation and outstanding projects in tunnelling and underground space use.
The finalists for the ITA Awards 2019 have been selected by the 17 member panel of judges, which is chaired by ITA President Jenny Yan. Presented for categories including outstanding tunnelling projects, technical innovation, safety initiatives, and innovative underground space concepts, as well as Young Tunneller of the Year, the Awards ceremony will be held in Miami, Florida, USA, in conjunction with the Cutting Edge Conference of the Underground Construction Association of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration.

The 2019 ITA Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards conference day and Awards presentation banquet will be held on 18 November 2019 and as part of the Cutting Edge Conference programme in Miami, Florida from 19 to 20 November. Throughout the Awards conference day, the finalists of each category will present the outstanding, award-winning features of their projects. The banquet dinner in the evening, will announce the winners and present the Brunel Trophies.
During the following two days 19-20 November, presenters and delegates at the Cutting Edge Conference, organized by the SME, will engage in in-depth dialogue on the latest advances in tunnelling technology and methodology and under a notable theme for this session on the international status of pressurized face tunnelling.
The ITA and the SME encourage all professionals in the international industry of underground space engineering and construction to support the ITA Awards, attend to conference day to share to achievements of the finalists in each category and join colleagues and friends to celebrate the Award winners as the best of the very best. The Awards day will then lead on directly to the Cutting Edge Conference on the following two days to provide one of the most engaging, interesting and enjoyable industry events of 2019.
Mark your calendar! 18-20 November, Miami, Florida and we look forward to meeting you there. Know more about the ITA Awards day and the Cutting Edge Conference programmes.
Projects, engineers and innovators around the world responded to the call for nominations for the 2019 ITA Awards series and 71 entries from 24 countries have been received for the competition. Entries represent:
The entries represent the demographic growth of mega cities around the world and their urban planning rethink to develop underground space, not only to free space on the surface but also to create cities and infrastructure that is resilient to natural disasters and the threats of climate change. Recently, Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro, co-chairs of ITACUS, the Committee on Underground Space of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, expressed a survival warning that the only way is down, to alert public authorities on the benefits of using underground spaces.
Throughout the world, innovative projects and technologies are emerging to take up this challenge. These include underground farms, underground pedestrian highways, sustainable lighting solutions and more automation of underground excavation operations among so many other developments. Since 2015, the ITA has hosted the international competition to seek and reward the most ground-breaking innovations and outstanding projects in tunnelling and underground space use.
For 2019, the 71 entries received are competing for the Brunel Trophy awarded to the winner of eight categories covering all the activities of the industry and rewarding one young tunneller of under 30 years old and the Lifetime Achievement of a selected leading professional of the international community.
The 71 entries received for the eight categories are as follows:
In 2019, the conference day for the presentations by the shortlisted entries in each category and for the Brunel Trophy presentation gala dinner to the winners will take place in November in the USA and as part of the 8th Cutting Edge conference in Miami, Florida.
Last year the 2018 ITA Awards series was hosted in Chuzhou, China, and the winners were:
As part of its mission, the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), as a non-profit, non-governmental international organization, aims at promoting the use of underground space as a solution to sustainable development. Founded in 1974 and operating out of Lausanne, Switzerland, the international association has 78 member nations, 300 affiliate members, 18 prime sponsors and 60 supporters.
In 2018 the 6km long immersed tube element of the Hong Kong-Zuhai-Macao sea link and its two man-made islands won the top honour as ITA Awards Project of the Year. Which projects and products will take top honours as the best of the best in 2019? Applications are now open for the 5th edition of the international industry Awards.
Nominations are called from industry to profile particularly outstanding achievements and developments in underground infrastructure across the world. Through these Awards, ITA aims to identify and support a wide and diverse range of projects, from large-scale and large-budget infrastructure developments to more discrete but revolutionary technical innovations.
