One double-track or two single-track tunnels for high-speed rail projects? Despite higher initial investment twin tubes have been selected for the Oslo-Ski rail link and it is the concept built for the Gotthard Baseline project. Single-tube double-track TBM and NATM tunnels for the Lower Inn Valley rail upgrade in Austria proved expensive in the extra escape facilities needed. By contrast, it is one mega TBM tube for the double-deck Alaskan Way highway replacement project in Seattle where bids are in and the result is to be revealed soon.
