The chaos caused across the world by last week's cloud of volcanic ash illustrates just how dependent we have become on one form of transport. The more intrepid and determined travellers came up with some ingenious alternatives but the extra time and costs involved were significant and telling. At BAUMA in Munich this week, there were many equipment developments on show and news of many new research and development projects in the pipeline, which we will report on in the coming weeks, but R&D is a costly business and just who pays is the question. Much money, time and engineering talent can be sunk into R&D for potentially little return but the process is so vital for facing the challenges of tomorrow. It is by developing new engineering projects, such as the floating submerged tunnel concept for example, that we will change the way we build and use our world in the future.
