Crossrail, London Underground station upgrades, and the proposed second high-speed railway survived this week's UK Government Spending Review, to the great relief of the UK tunnelling industry and its international suppliers, while in the United States, efforts are underway to save the ARC railway project under the Hudson into Manhattan from threatened cancellation by the Governor of New Jersey who states that it is too expensive and that the State could not afford any cost overruns. Cutting public infrastructure works is perhaps the worst thing to do in times of recession.
