History is made today as the first tube of the Gotthard Baseline rail tunnel through the Swiss Alps holes through. Nine years after excavation began from the Bodio Portals in the south, the first 57km long passage way through the mountains is about to finish. On the other side of the world in Seattle, Washington, procurement progresses on the next major undertaking in the tunnelling world as bidders prepare to submit proposals to build the world's largest TBM bored tunnel at 16m diameter or more. Momentous achievements in engineering for sure.
