Investigating the composition of the geology to the fullest extent possible, and applying excavation methods, ground control measures and geotechnical monitoring systems to ensure the tightest management of anticipated conditions and predicted ground behaviour is the foundation of successful, incident-free progress. With the main contracts for excavating the twin-tube railway tunnels under the heart of London for the Crossrail project nearing the point of award, we begin this week a series of reports that examines the programme of site investigations and excavation management measures that the project team has implemented to maintain the highest degree of control starting with an overview of the strategy. This will be followed by the results of site investigation and geological studies and the settlement control measures to be applied.
