The terrifying earthquake today in Japan highlights the confidence engineers have, and the general public should have, in the resilience of tunnels to seismic activity. Amid the chaos, Tokyo's underground infrastructure is expected to have survived the destructive shake although further news is awaited. The west coast of North America must stand on alert just as Chile and New Zealand remain on guard.
