Much is spoken of 'allowable volume losses' as a measure for minimising surface settlement above tunnel excavations in urban areas but what are the processes used to calculate these specifications? A Feedback contribution sheds light on the methods used in the UK but how do these differ from the processes used internationally? Technical systems to monitor and mitigate for surface settlement are now well established.
