- Students at high schools offering specialized engineering classes in Miami-Dade County are treated to inspirational visits by engineers with the Port of Miami Tunnel Project. As part of promoting National Engineer's Week (Feb. 20-26) members of the team explained the engineering and design of the Miami's largest civil engineering project that will transform the way traffic flows through the city. After watching an introductory video that showcases tunnels around the world, project engineers spoke about their careers and previous engineering and tunnelling experiences.

Inspiring a career in tunnel engineering
- "This highway tunnel project in Miami is receiving global attention," said Gus Pego, Secretary of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six, "so it is a perfect opportunity to reach out to our engineering high schools. We want to make sure future engineers are motivated by the Port of Miami Tunnel project and about the local, national and international opportunities available in the engineering profession."
- Schools to be visited included the National Academy Foundation (NAF) engineering academies, North Miami Senior High School, Hialeah Gardens Senior High School, and Booker T. Washington Senior High School. These schools are among the few in Miami-Dade County that offer an engineering program of study in Grades 9 through 12.
- Coordinated jointly by school authorities, FDOT District Six and Miami Access Tunnel (MAT), the private consortium building the tunnel, this first year for the program is planned to expand in coming years until the targeted tunnel completion date of 2014.
- "We want to emphasize to high school students the importance of continuing on to higher education," said Chris Hodgkins, Vice President of MAT.
