Seli News Release
- Assembly of a 7.83m diameter TBM is in the final phases of readiness to excavate a 17km long irrigation tunnel in the agricultural district of Suruc in Turkey. Supplied by Seli of Italy, the double shield universal (DSU) TBM will be used by main contractor ILCI INSAAT SANAYI VE TICARET A.S of Ankara to build the segmentally lined tunnel for the Turkish commissioner DSI XV REGIONAL DIRECTORATE Sanliurfa to improve the irrigation system to the rich crops of this dry plain region in the south near the Syrian border.

Assembly of the 7.83m TBM
- The TBM contract with Seli was signed in late September 2009 and excavation is expected to begin in late September 2010. Under the contract, SELI will supply a package of auxiliary equipment as well as technical assistance during the TBM boring operations and for equipment maintenance.
- Having being involved on the 17km long x 4.88m o.d. double-shielded Mavi irrigation tunnel project for the same client since 2007, Seli signed the second Suruc tunnel contract with the Turkish commissioner in late September 2009. The 17.2km x water tunnel project will channel water from the Atatürk Dam as part of a larger project to irrigate the regions of the South and Eastern Anatolia region. Both the public and the private sectors are involved on the project. The public sector is represented by the State Agency, Devlet Su Isleri, (DSI) and the General Directorate of Rural Services (GRDS); the private sector is represented by a group of farmers.

- The State Agency DSI was founded in 1954 under the supervision of the Public Works Ministry and is in charge of planning and managing water resources in Turkey. It is divided into Regional Directorates and the Suruc project is being managed by the XV Directorate of Sanliurfa.
- The 17km long tunnel will be built by main contractor ILCI INSAAT SANAYI VE TICARET A.S. at an altitude of about 580m. The drive will be advanced on an average uphill slope of 0.49‰ through the Gazientep Formation of the Eocene and Oligocene geological period.
- The formation consists of calcareous and karsk members (Teog), calcareous and clayey members (Teogt), and calcareous and clayey members with marnes (Teogm).
- Investigations revealed the presence of groundwater, which shows a quite regular profile along the whole tunnel. As excavation progresses, the 7.83m o.d. tunnel is lined with 30cm thick hexagonal precast concrete segments.

Assembled TBM before dispatch
- Turkey is a promising market for Seli. Valuable opportunities are to be found in construction of new subways and following privatisation of the electricity sector. "Market perspectives are interesting there, since Turkish companies have a high electromechanical culture and are more and more looking for highly specialised partners such as Seli to support particular projects," said the Seli management. In less than two years, SELI was awarded the construction of two of the longest water tunnels in the country - the Mevi and the Suruc drives. Excavation of the Suruc tunnel is expected to take about three years to complete.
