COMPANY NEWS Atkins scores another Qatar World Cup contract Jan 2012
Atkins News Release
Engineering design consultancy Atkins has scored its second Qatari infrastructure design contract win in just over a month.

Qatar's integrated rail project is worth US$37 billion

The UK-based company is awarded a three-year £70 million contract by the Qatar Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, to help deliver its multi-billion dollar transport and infrastructure programmes.
Under the contract Atkins will establish a Central Planning Office (CPO) to co-ordinate current and planned road, rail, metro and other major infrastructure projects as Qatar prepares to become the first Arab host of the soccer World Cup in 2022.
A number of high value construction contracts associated with Doha metro and other transport projects are expected to begin rolling out later this year.
Tuesday's (January 10, 2012) announcement comes barely a month after Atkins was awarded a £65m five-year contract to help transform the roads and drainage systems in Qatar's capital city, Doha. Atkins, which established a Qatari base in the Middle East in 2002, was also heavily involved in the design of the route alignment and tunnelling for Dubai's metro system, the first section of which opened in 2009.
Uwe Krueger, Atkins' Chief Executive, said: "We are working with Government stakeholders to help deliver the most comprehensive and integrated infrastructure investment programme in the region's history."
Part of Atkins' remit will be to help oversee and co-ordinate the massive US$37 billion Qatari Integrated Rail project, which involves the construction from scratch of a 358km metro system for Doha, high-speed rail lines to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and a heavy rail freight network. Qatari Rail and its strategic partner Deutsche Bahn expect to be in a position in March this year to draw up prequalified shortlists for five design-build packages worth between $700 million and $1.5 billion.
