As the ITA spearheads a global effort to effect designs that will make urban infrastructure more resilient to the elements, New York's subway and underground structures lie inundated with corrosive seawater. With the clean-up bill estimated at US$20 billion, and a transport network that will take weeks to fully restore, the cost of installing effective protection measures seems mandatory rather than optional.
