Highway tunnels catapulted TBMs to their mega +14m diameter status, with the first applied in Japan in 1994. Since then mega machines have continued their association with highway projects and Australia, among others, is blazing the trail with new mega TBM highway projects proposed in Melbourne and Sydney.
