Design and construction of fixed links across wider and deeper waterways present the most engaging of engineering challenges. Undersea mined tunnels and immersed tube technology, as well as long bridge building has been taken to cutting edge limits over recent years. Perhaps the next step is a combination of the two. The submerged floating tunnel concept is again attracting serious attention. It can only be a matter of time before this long discussed innovation is transferred from study to prototype construction. A discussion on the SFT concept last year in Norway will be followed up this year with a conference planned for China.
