Preparing for the worst has to be the approach when faced with a project that is mutually agreed to be heading into highly complex and potentially defeating geology. Being overly optimistic and hoping for the best could prove a very expensive alternative but who is responsible for ensuring a TBM is equipped to be fit for purpose - the client, the contractor, the engineer or the TBM supplier? Not an easy call to make.
