Spain's 2,900km high-speed rail network is reported as the second largest in the world after China. From the first line opening in 1992, the network has been built for a reported €45 billion plus €12 billion for current projects. This is about 4% of GDP and an average cost of about €14 million per-km, compared to €22 million per-km in Germany, €40 million per-km in Italy and €30 million per-km in Japan.
