Hiding the geology behind shielded TBMs and precast segmental linings is one of the greatest drawbacks of the method, particularly for long tunnels under great depth. Site investigation is, by default, limited and the risk of meeting extreme conditions is high. Under such circumstances many would argue that being able to 'see' the rock is more than half way to getting a heading through and having it fit for purpose once inaugurated.
