Many would agree that the start of underground metro systems in Asia began with the knowledge and confidence of British engineers. That is certainly true of Singapore when the LTA recurited Terry Hulme to head its metro tunnelling division in the early 1980s. Hulme went on to support metro plans in other Asian cities and to mentor many a local tunnelling engineer, many working on expansion of the Singapore Metro, now all, and only, underground.
